I am pleased to welcome you to the Bergen County Utilities Authority web site. As the County Executive for the state’s largest county, I realize the importance of proper wastewater and solid waste management to ensure the safety of our community and environment. The BCUA’s wealth of expertise and experience has provided these important services to Bergen County for over fifty-five years.
Whether it is providing wastewater services for forty-seven municipalities or solid waste disposal services for twenty-five municipalities, the BCUA provides a level of service that is invaluable to Bergen County. The BCUA’s household hazardous waste, computer recycling, and tire recycling collection programs have provided Bergen County residents with an environmentally safe alternative for the proper disposal of these materials. The School Laboratory Clean-Out Program has enabled schools to properly dispose of unwanted laboratory chemicals in a safe and cost effective manner. The innovative wastewater programs such as the beneficial reuse of sewer sludge has provided a substantial savings for Bergen County wastewater rate payers.
As a proponent of sharing government services as a means to lower property taxes, I am extremely pleased with the efforts that the BCUA has put forth to meet this goal.
In 2004, I created a task force to determine the potential cost-savings that would result from merging the operations at the BCUA with the Edgewater Municipal Utilities Authority. After much study and debate, the task force concluded that a merger of the two agencies was feasible and cost effective for all participating members of both utilities. During October 2007 this merger was completed.
This is the essence of sharing services: combining duplicative government functions and passing the savings along to the taxpayers. The management team at the BCUA has embraced this philosophy and strives to meet this objective. I am proud of these efforts, and in everything the BCUA does to promote a clean, healthy environment.
I look forward to working with the commissioners of the BCUA in developing additional programs that protect the environment of Bergen County and provide savings to the Bergen County taxpayer. I hope you find the information on this web site useful to you and your family. Thank you again for visiting.
Sincerely,
Dennis McNerney
County Executive
